Viral posts on social media are uncovering the bitter, unfortunate reality in Saudi classrooms, where students, and even some teachers, partake in activities and behaviors that not only contradict social customs and traditions, but also jeopardize the productive academic environment in schools.
Videos on social media taken by a student show a group of students playing card games in a corner in the class, while the teacher continues to explain the lesson without intervening to put a stop to the behavior.
In another school in Anaiza, a student photographs his classmate dancing behind the teacher as he explains the lesson to another student, while in Tabuk, students turn the hallway of a school into a slide by pouring liquid soap on the ground.
Other students are seen in a video putting a prayer carpet on the teacher’s chair and asking him to sit down and rest, only for the chair to collapse when he sits down, causing the teacher to fall to the ground in pain and shame.
Other similarly alarming scenes show students breaking a classroom window with a chair, and others sleeping on their textbooks in the middle of the lesson. Hits on YouTube for these videos have reached as high as 3.3 million views.
Commentators on social media expressed significant concern over these images, and many are asking about monitoring and penalizing such inappropriate behavior in a school setting.
Writer Khaled Al-Damiri described the current educational environment in a short film, in which he provides a comparison between the stature of teachers in the olden days and the mockery of teachers by students today.
The videos have also raised questions about the responses of teachers and their attention to maintaining a productive environment, as teachers appear in many videos ignoring the distracting behaviors of students in the classroom.
“What we see in schools and what we hear from our colleagues far exceeds what is seen in these videos that have gone viral on social media,” says one teacher, Mohammed Ahmed. “Despite the ban of bringing mobile phones to schools, the rule is not enforced, and this has allowed the spread of strange behaviors that take place at schools.”
“The most alarming video to me was one showing students stashing a lizard in a teacher’s bag and then photographed his fear and panic upon discovering it,” he said.
“The audience is typically concerned and sympathizes with students when they are subject to harsh behaviors from teachers, but the reaction is not the same for teachers and what they experience at the hands of students, and this is very strange,” he said
